Consulting Resources – because we are in this together.

A consultant is often thought of as an experienced professional who provides expert knowledge for a fee. But it is more than that!

A management consultant is a professional. It is someone who is doing this as a profession – not as a part time job, not to fill time between jobs, not to supplement income part time in their old job now that they have retired.

You can learn about the profession of management consulting by checking with the Institute of Management Consulting in your country. Check out the web site of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI) to learn about the global standards of the management consulting profession here.

As a management consulting professional, I am a Certified Management Consultant in my home country’s management consulting institute: CMC-Canada.  My certification is portable everywhere in the world because of international reciprocity agreements amongst the Institutes. This allows me to connect with colleagues that I know I can trust around the world, and I have leveraged that to build the global footprint of Effective Managers™. I am honored and privileged to have travelled and work in 57 countries on every continent except Antarctica. And I aspire to travelling there!

As part of my management consulting journey I have volunteered for over a decade with CMC-Canada and ICMCI to help advance the profession of management consulting. I served as Treasurer of the global board for 5 years and am proud to now carry the title of Chairperson of the Board of ICMCI. In this role I also collaborate with colleagues from around the world. These experiences never fail to impress me with the ingenuity, dedication, and openness of my colleagues.

In this section of the Effective Managers™ web site it is my pleasure to share with my colleagues to pass on what I have learned, to create opportunities to learn from my colleagues, and to share some of the eLearning resources that I have developed over the years that can be used to help clients improve performance.

The Effective Point of Accountability™

Organizations are increasingly being held accountable. But what does that mean for individuals in the organization? Concepts like “single point of accountability” and “lowest point of accountability” help. But they are not sufficient. This document works through the concept of accountability as it applies to managers and employees throughout the organization. It then provides concrete examples of how organizations can establish accountability for work as it flows down the organization, and as it flows across the organization.

Maturation of Not-For-Profit Organizations

Much has been written about governance and management, and it is well understood that there must be a separation between the governance of an organization and its management. What is not as well understood is that as Not-For-Profit organizations gown and mature, the relationship changes – significantly. What works in one organization may not work well in another. Here is why.
